Such a committed staff! Meet the mentors and leaders of Tutored by Nature. Where's Catherine? Tasnim is in Australia. Tutored by Nature Inc developed and led local outdoor excursions for Fallingbrook M.S. (gr. 7's, Spr- 2015) and Rick Hansen S.S. (gr.9's, Fall-2014). Focus activity? Blindfold saunters, logging experience (pencil/water-colour sketch and photography), Mandala, Talk Circle and Eco-stewardship locally on the Creditview Wetland and Carolyn Creek riparian.
Sauntering Carolyn Creek - paying attention with all senses. The Fallingbrook gr. 7 students could sense both the beauty and ugly of their community's subwatershed.

Their logbooks and circle talk communicated a great concern and awareness of local human impact on the ecology here - their home and habitat.

Connections with the Cardinals, Brown Cowbirds, Red-winged Blackbirds, various butterflies, snakes, mammals and that family of Mallards impacted the participants sense of awe, wonder and aesthetic sensibility.

The water course itself was devoid of fish, crayfish, benthics, etc. Wonder if it has anything to do with the concrete slabs? Just how unhealthy - how polluted is this water-course?

Creating an image of Mandala while sauntering the Wetland

Fallingbrook student creates a visual image - a water-colour sketch to communicate their chosen Mandala in Nature.

What is Mandala? The word Mandala is ancient Sanskrit for 'circle'. Another translation for Mandala is simply 'Community'.

It has been practiced for thousands of years by cultures such as the aboriginal people of North America (e.g., Anishenaabek people), Hinduism, Buddhists - the Tibetan Monks.

Mandala is always based on Circle and is understood as 'revelation of the cosmos'. It's not 'art as object' - rather, art as process. Medicine Wheel and dream catchers are also forms of Native American Mandala.

Mandala is highly valued as 'sacred practice' - symbolic representation of the universe. This is not told to the participants.Tutored by Nature staff and teachers who participate try to follow Rachel Carson's advice - to see Nature through the 'child's eyes' and leave teaching back in the classroom. Mandala is an experietial that helps the participant to focus on local Nature relationship, be awed, have fun and usually facilitates sensing Her unity. We shared Mandala experience in 'Talk Circle'.

Creating the water-colour or photo is representative of the eco-connection process as is the Buddhist and Aboriginal coloured sand drawings. <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Mandala

This participant's Mandala experience was in the North Cultural Meadow - one of the nine ecosites that make up the Creditview Wetland - a cultural swamp ecosystem. What is the relationship between sauntering local 'urban wilderness' and 'Eco-Aesthetic knowledge'?
S.J. Humans are afraid of nature and uncomfortable and afraid and they don't see nature like we do...we should tell people (what) we know about and actually have them come out (to experience)...

A.R. More and more people are coming into the area and then more buildings have to come in and then more problems...

Ch. I think people are just afraid. When people see bugs (and plants such as Giant Hogweed or Poison Ivy) they get afraid because they don't know if they are poisonous. What we can do is bring them out and our family and friends and show them...
It is made up of a myriad of ecological relationships (e.g., photo of Jack-in-the- Pulpit's habitat) - a communication system that is being impacted by local human community development. Students of Stephen Lewis S.S.'s grade 9 GLS/GLE programmes are attempting to recognize and understand the 'ecological issues' by developing their sense of ecological aesthetics. Hopefully solutions will be realized that could slow down local mono-cultural development. Is this even possible? The teachers and students believe that connecting through experience will provide them with an important sense of ecological community. Stay tuned.

(it) is very beautiful.. my class got to keep a log book...and we would sketch ...sometimes water-colour... we mulched trees and (I) made a water-colour of my Mandala (left). (The community doesn't) understand the importance (of this place)."

Fallingbrook grade 7A and 7C were at it again. These amazing students followed Mr. Zirnis (their wise teacher) out to the Creditview Wetland to meet Tutored by Nature and - away we went. Students were out a total of 6 - 1 hour excursions - April through to beginning of June. We sauntered (payed close attention while in Nature) the east buffer, the north cultural meadow and north swamp ecosites. Their pencil and water-colour sketches, and photography reflects meaningful personal knowledge gained of the Creditview Wetland. If you're a parent, make sure you read their informative naturalist's log books. (e.g., S.C's amazing sense of the Wetland's beauty (left) - her mandala at the marsh eco-site).

With the support and direction of the City of Mississauga Parks and Forestry (thanks John), the students ably mulched many of the trees already planted in the north meadow - to dissuade the bindweed from choking them out. Each student also set up and existed in his/her solo site - a Mandala - an ecosystem within the Wetland. They sensed and connected with some of the multiple relationships using all of their senses and then captured life and non-life here with their camera and water-colours.

Many of these young'uns from Fallingbrook were leaders at this year's BogFest and helped to make it such a success. Thanks for getting your parents out - you guys and gals are very special! Check out their connections made in the slide show - soon to be created (right).

Thanks to the cooperation, support, and guidance of Mississauga Parks and Foresty (esp. JC-G & JM), six classes of Stephen Lewis S.S. gr.9 sci/tech teachers and students continued their eco-stewardship of Park 403 Woodlands this past spring. Their first excursion with Tutored by Nature Inc started up March 25, just after the vernal equinox - the last excursion May 29, 2013 - classroom debriefing mid June.

Unrelenting development once again compounds local watershed fragmentation and creates a myriad of local ecological issues. Photo on the left -worth a thousand words? Inside the woodland, the students sauntered, sketched, water-coloured, photographed, set up personal mandalas and logged connections to this local urban wilderness. Their experience - their aesthetic knowledge is shared within the language, water-colours and photos. A sense of change in the season captured their imaginations - impact of the local community on this part of the watershed raised their compassion and concern.

Debriefing? Our progeny's solutions? Decrease soil compaction within the woodland, lessen the community air, water, soil and noise pollution and the littering; i.e., somehow remediate the problems caused by watershed fragmentation - local human behaviour. Actions recommended? Clean-up the litter, alert the local community to the beauty and importance of the biotic/abiotic relationships within the vernal pools and woodland, and totally support the City's decision to fence Park 403 before it disappears. Is there a sense of immediacy? Stay tuned next fall.

Stephen Lewis S.S. (gr.9 Science classes, March - May - Park 403/Sawmill Creek) and Fallingbroom M.S. (gr.7 Science classes, April - June) - Creditview Wetland- Carolyn Creek will partner-up once again with Tutored by Nature. The students and teachers will participate in a series of excursions on/in local ecosystems (see images). The purpose of the excursions is to develop personal knowledge - Nature relationship, through eco-stewardship and eco-aesthetics. Do you recognize the two ecosystems? Very special places in Mississauga and on the Credit River Watershed. Is there an 'Urban Wilderness' near your school?
Stephen Lewis S.S. grade 9 students will once again be participating in Eco-Stewardship Excursions into Park 403 (Thomas St.-Tenth Line) and nearby Sixteen Mile creek corridor. Ecologically, students will come-to-know about local community impact on relationships within these fractionated sub-watershed ecosytems. Teachers have once again looked to Tutored by Nature Inc to focus experience through eco-aesthetics. Grade 9 science students and Grade 11 Biology students at Stephen Lewis S.S. have completed their Tutored by Nature Inc eco-stewardship excursions at Park 403 (City designated name). The participants were very concerned by the current and future impact of townhouse development (see picture) on habitat, water quality, and the 4 ecosystems within (Upper Sawmill Creek, Park 403 Forest, a small Fen and Vernal Pool.

Stay tuned as Tutored by Nature inc will post their sense of relationship - the students' pencil/water-colour sketches, photography and loggings. Ecological issues become quite clear when the students get involved in such an experience.

Tutored by Nature Inc visited schools and presented artists and photographers with their gift certificates. .

Photography winners Virginia (Ginni) Hang (Bramalea S.S.) and Aniqa Khan (Port Credit S.S.) each received an $85.00 photo course gift certificate donated by Henry's. Both submitted an excellent series of photos accompanied by a blend of poetic/ecological language that creatively described experience.

Sania Siddique (Port Credit S.S.) - pencil sketch "Paw Prints" (on left) and Canna Liang (Bramalea S.S.) - pencil sketch "Distance Between the Worlds" each received $50.00 Henry's Photo product gift certificates. It's difficult to grasp that the artists sauntered outdoors, then created their subjects and log entries within 50 minutes.

Team Winners Bushra Bashir (Stephen Lewis S.S.) and Meghna Rajendran (The Woodlands S.S.) created an amazing language/art connection in their log book, water-colour sketches and photography. They believe "The 4 worlds (here)... all interconnect ... but are not in perfect harmony...humans have begun neglecting the worlds around them (as) can be seen on this part of the Credit River Watershed".

Team Winners Prabhjot Khabra and Navjot Kaur - both from Heart Lake S.S. also were presented with team gift certificates. Their combined art work - water-colour and pencil sketches "The Lonely Beautiful World" , "Animal World - Feather" demonstrate that all four worlds are present here, just west of David Suzuki S.S. Each of the teams received $40.00 product gift certificates for DeSerre's Art Store.Tutored by Nature inchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252338596101656127noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7208355172421454363.post-36559063990908300552012-02-20T14:17:00.005-05:002013-03-14T15:50:59.640-04:00PEYA ECOBUZZ CONFERENCE (FALL 2011) - OUTDOOR ART WORKSHOP

Teams were set up - then off we went to seek a 'sense' of balance of the four worlds of Nature as described by the Ojibwa culture - firstly the Physical World, then the Plant World, next the Animal World and lastly, the Human World. Hope that all connected in some way experientially from the excursion. Check out the slide show for some of the amazing art work. Did we find Balance?

During subsequent debriefing with Tutored by Nature Inc, the students and staff identified several local ecological problems and decided to take their eco-stewardship to another important level. They've partnered with Mississauga's Parks and Forests to follow- up with one important ecological solution - clean up Park 403 - help improve habitat around here for the local more-than-just-human life forms - December 13 was a good day.

Six classes organized two shifts throughout the day. Above is Mr.K's and Ms. L's classes' photo-op for Missisauaga News. Fruits of their labour? You could never guess what 'junk' they bagged. Teachers plan to sustain and expand the programme with Tutored by Nature Inc. Second semester - gr.9's (Sustainable Ecosystems) and the grade 11 biology classes are getting involved in a spring EcoStewardship. Talk about local hands-on educational experience to establish & recognize local Nature relationship - watershed ecological issues.

1. Ecoliteracy - "all education is environmental education...what is included or excluded...students learn that they are part of or apart from the natural world" (David Orr) - effective ecoliteracy happens outdoors where children participate - personally interact in Nature's classroom and through ecological stewardship experience.
2. Children in Middle Childhood stage of perceptual development (approx.6 - 12 yrs) need to experience Nature's relationship lessons through participation - extending their participatory consciousness.
3. Nature requires complete personal attention in Her natural classroom. She will then provide for the "sheer sensory experience" - meaningfully and in a lasting & connecting way. So, as Henry David Thoreau once said..."What business have I in the woods if I am thinking of something outside of the woods." (H.D. Thoreau, Walking, 1862, p.5) - a great lesson to learn through experience.
4. "Nothing lives unto itself" (Rachel Carson).

FLOW OF THE EXCURSION:
Meet and greet: Tutored by Nature Inc meets the class locally outdoors (within school walking distance) - onsite for purposes developing community, comfort, safety, continuity and to connect to the 'awe'.
Focus: Continuing with the local connection - the sheer sensory experience that awaits children in this local urban wilderness is prepped through a focus activity - an ecology game, initiative task, and/or physical sensing activity.
Direct Experience Activity - Time for the personal connections... students personally observe and record their interactions with the local watershed/subwatershed natural community - opportunity to discover the self in relationship; to sense the local ecosystem's healthiness and ecological interactions, to assess their personal impact/footprint, etc. Activity includes 'sauntering', 'tracking', 'solo-ing in the open blind' (silent observation techique within an urban wilderness space), Caring by participating in a watershed stewardship event - that will in some way support local habitats, and also to 'Sketch, Paint & Shoot’ (pencil sketch, water-colour sketch and photography) - a great way to get very close to nature, take her in and create self impressions.
Circle: Students meet to debrief in a 'Euro-Centric' traditional aboriginal circle for purpose of sharing direct experience expressively (oral and written). Circle will link their experience to the class's developing a group theme or identifying and solving a local ecological problem (e.g., mystery, ecological footprint, ecological stewardship, climate change, riparian/water-course health, local biodiversity and relationships, etc.)
Materials - the Young Naturalist's Log Book, a blindfold, a camera, writing/sketch materials, water-colout kit, binoculars, magnifying lenses, and/or compass. Stewardship equipment and materials are supplied by established partnerships (CVC, City of Mississuaga, Tutored by Nature Inc, EcoSparks, etc.)Tutored by Nature inchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252338596101656127noreply@blogger.com0
